A hemorrhoid is an enlargement of the vein located in the anus and the rectum. They are caused by the stretching and straining effects of various pressure related issues, such as stool strains, obesity, abnormal eating habits, pregnancy, and rectal intercourse. Hemorrhoid formation is also common to those who are at their 50s. As a last resort, surgery is an open option for the removal of hemorrhoids after natural means have been exhausted. Infrared photocoagulation, on the other hand, will cause a clot to be created in the affected vein. The hemorrhoid will eventually die as the clot cuts off blood supply to it. This is only best for small and medium-sized hemorrhoids.  Hemorrhoidectomy is a hemorrhoid surgery performed for severe cases. The surgeon clamps down the hemorrhoid so blood supply can be cut off from it. He then cuts the hemorrhoid off and treats the open wound that is left. Depending on the severity, a stapled hemorrhoidectomy is a good bleeding hemorrhoid treatment. On less severe cases, natural solutions are available. Nevertheless, no one can discount the effectiveness of a good hemorrhoidectomy.

During the hemorrhoidectomy procedure, the patient’s buttocks will be elevated to expose the rectal area and cleaned with an antiseptic solution to prevent infection. Either a spinal or general anesthesia is used during the entire surgery. General anesthesia is used when the patient wants to sleep during the procedure; and spinal, if he wants to remain awake.

Recovery from an external hemorrhoid treatment should include ample rest and some time away from normal activities as deviation from these may complicate or extend the healing time. It usually takes between two to three weeks for a hemorrhoid surgery wound to heal. Prescription pain reliever medications can be utilized to minimize pain especially during bowel movement.

Hemorrhoids always cause discomfort and sometimes lower down self-esteem. So whenever hemorrhoidial symptoms start to surface, it is best to treat it immediately, but it is not always the case. Internal hemmorhoids, unfelt and invisible, can develop into external prolapsed and protuded types. Good thing that medical science has developed the most effective hemorrhoid surgery there is, hemorrhoidectomy.
